The total number of blind people is around 0.5%. The iPhone, iPad, iPod, and so
forth, are general market products. They are the first general market products
of their type to have accessibility for the blind built in to every unit.
Products made specifically for the blind are significantly more expensive and
have fewer features. This is because the blindness market is so small.

The command structure for VoiceOver is quite different from the normal command
structure of the iOS devices. When a sighted person goes into accessibility to
activate VO, a warning pops up alerting the person that VoiceOver completely
changes the commands of the device. If a sighted person, who knows nothing
about VO, were to accidentally activate VO by pressing home three times rather
than two times when activating the app switcher, said person would believe
their iDevice was broken. They would complain and Apple would quickly develop a
reputation for products which easily break. So, in this case, our choices are,
deal with the fact that we need to activate triple-home click during initial
set-up, have a sighted person activate VO for us, or use iTunes to activate VO;
or we can switch to one of the specially designed products for the blind which
we know will always work for us from the outset.

The other choice, of course, is to switch to the latest Android device. So long
as TalkBack is installed and accessibility is activated, TalkBack can be
started at any time with a simple command. That said, the first time I
attempted it with a friend's new Android device running the latest Android OS,
TalkBack was not even installed, so he first needed to access the GooglePlay
store and install TalkBack. This surprised me as I had been given to understand
that TalkBack was on all Android Phones running the latest OS. Therefore, in my
opinion, iOS is still the best system around.
