I agree. iTunes should be installed even if he will not be using it to 
synchronize a lot of things. However installing ring tones and keeping iPhone 
backups will definitely require iTunes. It's true that you can argue that 
iCloud can be used for backup, however I still feel that a rudimentary 
understanding of how iTunes works should be required to minimize the 
frustration. Also, when I say you, I don't mean you personally.
