I've been known to use the on screen keyboard, even for long messages, but generally for longer messages, I either use a Verbatim bluetooth keyboard paired with my iPhone or wait until I get home and use my computer. When I use the Verbatim keyboard, I use the keyboard commands to simulate VO gestures, so that keeps me from moving back and forth between the keyboard and the touch screen, although sometimes there are a few things that are just easier to find on the touch screen.

To review text, you can use a VO gesture called the roter to adjust whether you're moving by character, word or line. Once you have that set, you can then just flick up or down to move according to what you just set with the roter.
