I don't think a 30 day trial would be stupid.

First, there are people who just flat won't lay out the money if they can't take the app for a spin first. They'll be losing out on these sales without some kind of demo or free trial.

Second, if someone takes advantage of the free trial and they like the program then they'll go ahead and sign up for a subscription.

Finally, you have those people who don't end up liking or wanting the product. If these people are weeded out with a free trial then you'll avoid all of the bad press of people complaining that they laid out their money for something they didn't end up liking. IMHO, it seems to me that this is the only people where they'd be losing money, and I'm not sure the bad press is worth it or that you want to base your business model on getting people who don't end up liking the product to buy it in the first place.

I also don't see how anyone could rip them off with this scenario. Sure, people could just keep creating new ID's and taking advantage of the 30 day free trial, but there are lots of other apps which follow this model and seem to be making money.

I don't know their business model, and I can't tell them what to do, but I won't be buying this app until I can either try it out myself or I see some pretty convincing demos or reviews of the product.

subscription, but free is just a nonstarter.
