It's possibly a keyboard emoticon. Some people choose to use number, letter, punctuation marks and other symbol combinations to make facial emotoicons, rather than use an actual face with the implied expression. Some find the keyboard strokes for emotoicons easier and faster when typing a message. It's a personal preference. I prefer to use actual facial emotoicons to get my feelings across to someone.
