These are called "emoticons" (a blending of the words "emotion" and "icon")
and tend to be vague pictures of what their intended representation might
look like. For any of you who might have never seen, please pardon me if I
am not offering a clear explanation here.
The heart symbol "<3" does vaguely look like the typical depiction of a
heart on it's side, the smiley face is depicted by ":-)" as the ":"
represents the eyes, the "-" represents the nose and the ")" represents the
upturned mouth of a face on its' side as well. There are a number of these
emoticons originally used to express clearer intentions when e-mail was
strictly text.
