Since I don't always have my phone right at hand, instead of a reminder I
think I am going to set an alarm so no matter where in the house the phone
might be, I will have to attend to it. I was fifteen minutes late to a
meeting the other night because I did not have my phone in my pocket.

Subject: Re: Appointments and Notifications
The default calendar app also has two alerts you can set for each
appointment. But, yes, you do have to make sure you have a calendar alert
sound set under settings.

How did you set up the appointment? Did you use the Calendar app?
I use Google Calendar as my default calendar, and when I set up an event,
I have two alerts I can set for each event. If you've done this, and
you're still not hearing an alert, you may want to go into Settings ->
Sounds and make sure you have a sound set for your calendar alerts and
make sure the volume for your alerts isn't set to zero.

I may have missed an answer to this question, so appologies. But, how
can you make sure that you have some kind of notification in advance of
an appointment? I set one up once and heard nothing when the time for
the appointment approached.
Thanks.
