Same here. Also, I have not been successful in getting an alert played
unless I leave the calendar open. Is there a way to get the alerts and lock
the screen?

In the add appointment screen, double tap on the alert button and flick
through and choose the amount of time you want the first alert. Then
double tap done to go back to the add appointment screen.
Then right flick through the screen, and you will find a second alert
button after the first one you have already set. This second one does
not appear until the first alert has been set.
If you want to set a second alert, then double tap on the second alert
button, and do the same thing you did with the first alert.
I usually set two alerts.
I usually set my first alert 1 day ahead just as a reminder what is
coming the next day, then I set my second alert for a little before my
actual appointment time.
