I don't think the question is what's going away. Obviously there will still be a lot of iPhone 4, 4S and 5 out there. The question is what will Apple still be manufacturing and selling as new iPhones. Googling around reveals that there's a lot of speculation out there, and we won't know for sure until Tuesday.

One rumor is that the 4S will be the entry level model, with it's smaller screen, the 5C will be the midrange model and the 5S will be the high end model. In this scenario, the iPhone 5 would stop being manufactured since the 5C is so similar except for the plastic body. Given that the 4S still has the 30 pin connector though, it may be the phone that's discontinued.

The other scenario is that the 5C becomes the low end model, the 5 is the midrange model and the 5S is the new high end model. In this scenario, Apple would stop manufacturing and selling the 4S.

One article where the various rumors are discussed is at http://www.iphonehacks.com/2013/09/iphone-5c-rumors.html

Ditto. The 4 or the 4s won't be going away either, the 3Gs will though
as iOs 7 will not run on this now ancient phone.

Jumping in to this discussion, I doubt the five will be going away

Siegard, Are there still rumors the 5 is going away? Just wondering
what I
will be able to get at upgrade time in December. Thought I would be
going to
the 5, but on Apple Today, think that is the name, it seemed to be the
rumor
5 would be going away. Maybe the 5-c would be the upgrade, hoping not!

Hi Tess and others,

As Fred pointed out, the Apple event during which we learn all about what
the new iPhone has to offer will be on Tuesday at 10 AM Pacific. I can't
remember when you were able to preorder the iPhone 5 last year, but it is
assumed that the new iPhone just like last year will be in Apple
Stores on
Friday, September 20 and also that if you order it from Apple online that
you will get it on that day. I think you will be able to preorder the
phone
eiter on the 10th or shortly after for delivery by the 20th.

If you want to know more I suggest you check if Rob will put out another
Today in iOS Podcast episode today or tomorrow. He did mention the
following
on the Today in iOS website regarding what we might see in the new
iPhones:

Here is a Bingo Card with many of the Rumors being thrown around for the
next Gen iPhone (5S) and possibly lower cost iPhone (5C) and what may
also
be announced at the September 10th Event.

These are not my predictions - just a listing of some of the rumors I
think
have even a remote possibility.

We will go over this Bingo Card on Ep 281 which will be out late this
week
and then again on Ep 282 which will cover what was announced at the
Special
