I had my 4S swapped out about two weeks ago because the volume button was broken on it and since I had insurance on it through the carrier, I figured why not get it replaced even though my upgrade was due for September 1st. Sprint gave me a "reconditioned" device which I expected and I was told that they weren't working with brand new 4S's anymore. For my purposes the reconditioned phone was perfectly fine since I plan on getting the new 5S or whatever it'll be called when it comes out and will either give my wife my quazi-new 4S or simply sell it along with all the accessories like Mophie Juice Pack, rubber protective case and extended charging cable if the cheaper 5C turns out to have comparable or better specs than the 4S so we can both have phones with lightning connectors. While the 4S will probably still be around in circulation in secondary markets for a long time, its continued manufacturing will all but certainly go the way of the dodo bird.

You've been able to buy brand new iPhone 4S since the iPhone 5 was announced, and I doubt Apple stocked a year's worth of iPhone 4S in advance. A quick Google search lead to the web page http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/03/12/apple-to-diversify-manufacturers-f or-iphone-5s-and-low-cost-iphone where it talks about Apple's manufacturing partners producing low cost iPhones, namely the 4, 4S and upcoming 5C. Also, don't forget the global picture where the iPhone 4S is still a very popular phone.
