The Messages app will send a message as an iMessage if it's available, i.e. you're sending a message to another iPhone user. this is the default behavior, but you may want to check Settings -> Messages to make sure iMessages are enabled. There are some other settings in their you may also want to check out.

As far as learning is concerned, I try to read over documentation, such as the IOS user's manual. I also learn a lot just by reading questions, answers and discussions on this and other lists. Exploring, playing around and experimenting with different settings and features is another way I learn. Finally, I'll just Google something on line and read up on some topic or issue. I think the key for me is to be patient and not try to learn everything all at once. I've been using accessible smart phones since 2002, and I remember when CDMA and GSM were strange and foreign concepts to me. You pick up a few things after 10 years of use.

Hi, it seems that all my text messages are added to my verizons count
for 1000 per month. I noticed that my send are not matter what or how
it is sent. That is why I asked. There is so much to learn here and I
very much appreciate any of my questions to be answered. How do you
learn so much about this. Andy

iMessages work between Apple devices and go over the network through
Apple servers. SMS are text messages between cell phones going through
your cell phone providers servers.

SMS will cut into your text messaging limit. You need to have a cellular
connection. You can only send text messages between phone numbers.

iMessages will only work between Apple devices. You don't need a phone
number. It won't use text messaging limits but will use either cellular
data or will work over wifi.

I did a google search for iMessage versus SMS, and I came up with
http://www.ianswerguy.com/imessage-difference/ where you can read more.

Go to Settings, swipe down to messages and make sure send and SMS
messages is turned on. This will allow you to send and receive SMS when
iMessage isn't available.

Hi,
I have an iPhone 4s and have unlimited text messenging but very little
cellular data.
The other day I was out and a friend sent me an iMessage. I didn’t
get this since I was not at home on wifi all day and have my data
turned off.
My question is how can I ensure that I get all messages from contacts
when I am out somewhere? I know iMessages use data or wifi so how can
I have them set as normal text messages. I have an iPod touch as well
so want to be able to have people be able to contact via email as well.
Please help since I don’t want to miss receiving messsages.
