Ray, Are you on an iPhone or iPad? If you're on an iPad you can set the side switch behavior to either mute/unmute or lock/unlock orientation. This is found in Settings -> General -> Use side switch to...
Unfortunately this option isn't available on the iPhone it seems. Thelock orientation option is in the Control Center though, The options are, from left to right: Airplane Mode, WiFi, Bluetooth,Do Not Disturb, Lock Orientation. Under this row of toggles is the Brightness control and under that are the Music controls, then things like Calculator, Clock, Flashlight are on the bottom row.
