I wonder how you might have handled this situation.

I was going for an appointment in an area and office building I have not
been to before. I needed to transfer busses and then get off where I have
not taken the bus before. I then had to find a stop when leaving the
appointment.

I have most of the usual navigational tools talked about here. I had two
people look at my screens and use their own devices to try to help orient me
to the situations, and we all came up way off.

When I changed busses first, I needed to know where the next stop would be.
Whether it was a simple pole or bench or shelter would have been most useful
to know, too. Then, I needed to know which stop would be best so I could
find a cross walk. I knew where the building I was going was, but how about
where the door was in relationship to the street corner, parking lot etc.
Coming home, I needed to know where the returning bus stop was and again, it
would have been most helpful to know if it was a pole, bench or shelter.

After a horrible experience getting to my appointment, I did call the
transit service and asked if they could tell where my stop would be, etc. I
don't know what tools they had, but I was told approximately where it was in
relationship to a street crossing and that it was a shelter.

Given those circumstances, can anyone think how I could have gotten that
information on my own or how I could have had others find the information.
Of course, I could simply call the transit company and hope they always can
find the stop information, but I still would like to know the layout of
buildings.

I read things all the time about how people use maps and street views to
tell virtually everything about locations, but it seems when I need that
information I don't know how to find it or ask others to look for it.

All ideas how you might handle these situations will be most appreciated. I
should say I have very good cane skills and can generally orient myself to
any situation. I would just like to be able to do so faster and easier using
today's technologies, if possible.

Eric
