Hello Lori,

It's a matter of opinion but for the most flexibility in terms of rolling
back to a previous version of an app which may have been broken in the most
current version, backing up to a computer is best. Further, if you can
keep your iTunes library on an external hard drive, you will be better
protected against losing your library in case the computer ever goes
belly-up. Also, keeping your Library on an external drive allows you the
freedom of having multiple computers to have full access to your library.

At best, however, the iTunes library is an absolute mess in its
implementation so do not be disheartened if you find it difficult to grasp
the finer points of iTunes back-end data management.

iTunes was not originally designed to do what it now does; however, by the
time Apple realized this, it was far too late to do a complete redesign for
fear of alienating hundreds of thousands of customers.
