I forgot to mention that the Backup Contacts + Share app I suggested will also allow you to use iTunes to save the backed up files to your desktop computer's hard drive for safe storage.
You will want to install and use this app, attach your phone and launch iTunes, then save/export your backed up Contacts to your desktop before experimenting with iTunes. <Smile>.
