This is true, but the same can be said for any main stream computer application. I still remember the time when GUI's were considered to be an insurmountable barrier to the blind since they were designed for the sighted who could scan the screen and easily find an icon with the mouse. Ditto when people just assumed the touch screen would never be usable by the blind. Apple did design and operating system and screen reader that demonstrated the blind could use a touch screen and could use it very efficiently.

A small form factor may not lend itself to word processing as much as a desktop form factor does, but I don't see why this would be any different for the blind than it is for the sighted. In fact, I think the small form factor may force a cleaner less cluttered interface which may even mean a more even playing field for the blind, as we see with so many other mobile apps already.

I'm pretty confident there are some smart software engineers out there who will come up with some pretty innovative ideas on how to make these office suites accessible to the blind on the mobile form factor, just as they figured out how the blind could use the GUI and the touch screen. I for one am not going to just assume that it's an impossible task and we'll be left out of efficiently using these apps on our smart phones and tablets.

The problem might be one of users asking too much of the form factor. Small
apps such as what Microsoft is offering on the iPhone and such are not meant
to be full Microsoft Office replacements no matter how hard blind people try
to make them behave in this manner. these small apps might result in a more
productive experience for the sighted user, but this is because the iPhone
and such devices are designed for the sighted world, so when you read about
these apps anywhere other than these blind-centric lists, the apps boast
lots because sighted people can for the most part be much more productive
not having to swipe their fingers to the bone trying to find each icon or
control on the screen--they just scan the screen with their eyes and tap.

What do you feel can be done to improve the current accessibility or ease of
use?

Well it doesn't look like accessibility has improved at all. Almost
impossible to edit a document even with a keyboard. Nice that you can
do basic editing without subscribing but I don't really think it's
very useable yet frankly. Still pretty disappointing sadly.

Microsoft Word on the App Store on iTunes

You will need a Microsoft related account such as an email address which
ends with @live.com or @outlook.com

You will be installing the full app on your iOS device which means you
will
not need to visit a website or Wi-Fi to use these apps.

When installing the app you will begin with a brief demo.

You will be asked to enter your email address then your password.

Your app will now be setup.

You can purchase a subscription but it is not necessary as you can go
into
the menus and import from OneDrive via Wi-Fi etc.

You will only get basic features with the free apps, but this might be
enough for those on the go who aren't looking to torture themselves by
trying to author their book using this type of device.

The apps are not completely accessible as there is no way to return the
app
to it's normal view once one modifies the app to show in the full view.

If one is really interested in this type of access, please go through the
process of installing before asking questions as this will focus your
questions and eliminate easy questions which result in many, many
unnecessary replies. (Using nice tone).
