They are on ear. The flat ribbon inns in slightly raised square phone covers that lay against the outside of your ear. They do not block outside noise too much.

Now bend that into a shape to go over your head. It is kind of like the hairbands girls might wear. The disadvantage to this is they do not bend, so are not great for carrying around in a bag, as if bent too much they can break. Also, you can adjust the fit some by extending the headphone ends, but if you have a much larger or smaller head than usual, you can't do a lot about it. But, for $20 they are great! Especially for the purpose you indicate, I would recommend giving them a look. Don't let the price fool you.
