Ok, I've got good/bad news...

In the end, I decided to install CentOS just to test the card, I'll be
back on RHEL5 in a week or two.

After some tweaking (such as creating manually /dev/vgsm and ln -s each
../vgsm_meX inside), the card now installs correctly, lsmod shows
correctly, * modules too, and even the command

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# asterisk -rx "vgsm send sms vodafone 339xxxxxxx ciao"

works too.

I'd like to point out that your online documentation is misleading.
Telephone numbers are to be prefixed by a + or just remove 39. Either
way in ASCII it will work.

I actually can't make it work with UTF-8, though.

Status: 500
Response: Error
Message: unknown error

I tried even without the SMCC number (after all, in ASCII it worked
without), without much luck...

Even the error code has changed....

And I have another matter... I can't use the card for voice calls. This
is my * CLI output:

Verbosity was 3 and is now 25
-- Accepting AUTHENTICATED call from 192.100.100.85:
       > requested format = ulaw,
       > requested prefs = (),
       > actual format = ulaw,
       > host prefs = (ulaw|alaw|gsm),
       > priority = mine
    -- Executing [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1] Dial("IAX2/1914-8",
"VGSM/tim/+39339xxxxxxx") in new stack
    -- Called tim
-- VGSM/tim/1 is proceeding passing it to IAX2/1914-8
== Everyone is busy/congested at this time (1:0/0/1)
    -- Executing [EMAIL PROTECTED]:2] Hangup("IAX2/1914-8", "") in
new stack
  == Spawn extension (from-iax, 3398695689, 2) exited non-zero on
'IAX2/1914-8'
    -- Hungup 'IAX2/1914-8'

Note that right now IAX peers such as 1914 in my case work flawlessly
bidirectionally. I even set debug on on iax2 protocol, and it showed
nothing wrong on iax2 side, AFAIK.

here's the output from the telnet session while dialling from my iax
peer toward outside passing from the VGSM card:
