I have not had luck running cpan on VMS either. However 5.8.1 has built everything I have tried to load, including DBI and DBD::Oracle! Just download the files and install them the conventional way. I may try out CPANPlus to see if that works better on VMS...


I did find that DCL symbols can get in the way, such as having INSTALL defined:

CHARON$ sh sym install
 INST*ALL == "$SYS$SYSTEM:INSTALL/COMMAND"

The Configure.com for 5.8.1 is much better about complaining about conflicting symbols and logicals.
