Ummm, misconception here...  for the java you need 5800 AND 5900...

Jen, it seams that you firewall is blocking, the VPN connections...
I think that you should try getting the VPN/Firewall working, then 
vnc will work also...

You probably, could get better help from sygate.com, or a maillist there
as they would know all about the paramters and options from sygate
firewall where as we can only give you theoretical tips....
