Could the reason for this behaviour be that one usually won't have two
instances of NS running on one win95/98 machine? NS just opens another
window if one tries to get another instance. Both windows share the JVM
and all other resources. This happened to be a problem for me once, since
I used class variables in one of my Java/EAI applets.
