Yes, but that would not look like a senseless murder.
Let's just suppose that someone who benefits immensely from the hot fusion project AND held a grudge because of "Fire from Ice" wanted to off Gene from pure anger and spite. It's far less suspicious to hire a local brute to whack him with a pipe then hire a pro to off the brute than to pay the pro to do the job directly. It's probably cheaper too!
