Note that he did use an external heater before, and it worked, but nowhere near as well. Perhaps an IR effect enhances the reaction, but it does not seem essential. Others have speculated that putting the heater inside increases thermal gradients, which may help. It increases the output/input ratio (COP) simply because it takes less electric power to heat the inside to the same temperature. - Jed
