I am particularly excited about the role of rubbing in device processing. It was used by Nichia Corp in processing the first blue LEDs in 1995. No rubbing- no blue light lasing!
The rubbing causes nanoscale features to form and hold atoms in that region in a condition that prevents solid-solid phase transitions. They are left in a dynamic condition with large vibrational modes.
