If 50 cc is filled with Ni powder, and the density is half that of the solid metal, then there is enough Ni62 & Ni64 present to supply 5 kW for 207 days, assuming 5 MeV / reaction. By replacing it every 6 months, he ensures that he doesn't run out. (Of course if 30% of Ni was initially converted to Cu then it would last much longer.)
