When I was treated for hyperthyroidism with I-131, I could send GM tubes off scale at a distance of meters, even on the less sensitive scales. (I was told not to hold children on my lap for a few weeks.) Salt substitute (KCl) can send some meters off scale on the most sensitive setting (from the K-40).
