Yes, it is a misnomer, it is the side that is away from the earth and it is never seen from the earth, but it receive exactly the same amount of light than the other side does (over a full orbit of the moon around the earth). The moon is locked tidally with the earth in such way that one orbit corresponds to one rotation so it always shows only one side to the earth. But the sun lights up that side equally as the side that is oriented towards the earth.
