The Oppenheimer-Phillips process (mentioned by Jones) becomes quite interesting in the context of a d+Ni reaction. Given the very strong repulsion of the proton in the deuteron and the protons in the Ni, I assume the deuterons would be pressed into the nickel lattice sites with the neutron facing the nickel atom rather than the proton.
