Error handling and low-memory situations are something that need to be
considered in the design phase of a program. Once you have a design
implemented that did not take proper error handling into consideration
from the start, it's very hard to add it later. And unfortunately most
designs start from a proof-of-concept, where error handling is at best a
secondary consideration. Such are the ways of software design in all too
many unfortunate cases.
