nope i think the answer is that the developers first were simply to lazy do
develop proper and fast plugins for the standard image formats. so they just
took the datatypes. but as soon as the "progressive display" came to jpeg and
gif, datatyps just did not work. so they were forced to write plugins, which
i personally prefer.

but you're not able to see progressive pictures which is mor important for
me than just quick decoding of images.
