Some folks in VTJP asked about a workshop I am organizing at the National
Lawyer's Guild Convention in Portland next week. Here is a flyer describing it.
Jimmy
NATIONAL LAWYER'S GUILD
CONVENTION
WAR CRIMES, VIOLATIONS OF INTERNATIONAL
LAW, AND RESISTANCE TO ISRAELI OCCUPATION
WORKSHOP
DATE: OCTOBER 30,
2005 (Sunday)
TIME: 10:45
TO NOON
This panel
will explore the legal efforts to challenge the crimes of the
Israeli occupation historically, identifying major achievements and major
setbacks, and will offer suggestions on where best to concentrate efforts in
future litigation and advocacy strategies. Included will be a discussion
of the Corrie litigation, the International Court of Justice Decision, and
the litigation initiated in England that resulted in the issuance
of the arrest warrant for the IDF General, and of course an identification
of Israeli war crimes and violations of international law. The workshop
will also focus on non-violent resistance, including divestment, boycotts, and
refusal.
PANELISTS:
Susan Akram: Currently,
Associate Professor of Law Boston University. Professor Akram has
published extensively in the area of Palestinian Refugee Rights, on the Israeli
Occupation and its violations of International Law, and is co-author
with Professor John Quigley( NLG member) of "Legal Analysis and
Potential Consequences" of the International Court of Justice's Advisory Opinion
of the Legality of Israel's wall in the Occupied Territories. Professor Akram
has taught at the Palestine School of Law at Al-Quds University
East Jerusalem.
Zaha Hassan: An NLG member
who has published numerous articles addressing
the unlawfulness of the Israeli Occupation.
She is a frequent contributor to BADIL publications, and has worked
with NGOs in Palestine. She is the past co-chair of the US Campaign to End
the Israeli Occupation, and has analyzed US law to determine
possible violations for knowingly selling equipment to countries who engage in
the commission of human rights. Zaha is a remarkable asset for
understanding U.S. statutes and international law as well as an incredible
activist.
Shamai Leibowitz:
An Israeli human rights lawyer who is currently enrolled in the masters program
at the American University's Washington College of Law in
Washington, D.C., and is a refuser.
This panel will
advance our strategies for middle east work. It should be viewed as
a supplement to the International Law CLE which has its focus on the
use of international law in our domestic areas. This panel
will integrate domestic and international law as we seek strategies that we can
implement in the United States as well as internationally. We hope that
all of you that are still in Portland will attend. You should not miss this
presentation. Please encourage anyone you know who will still be in Portland to
attend.
Note: Zaha Hassan has arranged to have
us receive and distribute at the convention a paper prepared by
Daniel Machover, a member of the London Legal Team that sought the arrest
warrants for the Israeli General.
