When connecting two hubs or switches, the only thing that is important
that there is exactly *one* crossover between the two devices. This can
be accomplished in many ways:

1. A crossover cable.
2. A plain port to a crossover port with a normal cable.
3. A crossover cable between two crossover ports.

To see if a cable is crossover or not, plug both ends into the same
device, into normal ports, and both should lite up. Conversely, a normal
cable doesn't light up, unless you plug one end into a crossover port.

A crossover port is sometimes called uplink.

You normally cannot use both the crossover port and the socket directly
next-to it (there is normally a line drawn between them.)

Finally, I have never heard of an automatic crossover port.

Good luck.
