Hi John ,
I would suggest to you that if you do not have an external firewire
drive
that it is an advantage to have one . In trouble times it is possible
to boot
from an OSX system stored on a Firewire external drive .
I don't know whether that Maxtor has Firewire as well as USB connections
but because of it's price I am guessing it is USB only .
That said , you should be able to backup data onto any Hard drive !
The Maxtor more than likely comes formatted for a PC ,
but that is usually not a problem as in most cases you can reformat
using
a Mac OS Drive utility .
In your case you would probably still wish to boot from OS9 2 2 ,
in which case you would need to reformat using the OS9 Drive Utility
and instal OS9 Hard Disk drivers.
Do you have an OSX copy of Roxio Toast ? If so it should have a copy
of Deja Vue with it , which will back up your Users data by auto
or Manual means.
Auto as in you set a time of the day and day of the week ( can be
every day ) and
so long as the backup drive is connected and powered up the back up
takes place.
Manual means you start it Manually and it does all the action needed .
If you have no copy of Deja Vue I suggest you look over Superduper
which is cable of cloning your total hard drive and backing it up ,
or if you wish , back up only your users .
With an external firewire drive it is excellent for copying in all
sorts of situations.
