Given the earlier advice from Walter, I've just finished cleaning out the air intake at the bottom of the machine.
It was VERY clogged!!!!!
I noticed that the machine was regularly recording CPU temps of 85C but now seems to be sitting at around 60-70C

We shall see if the problem continues.

Thanks for the advice,

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post a follow up to this problem for the benefit of any future users who have similar.

One week after cleaning out the air intake grill at the bottom of the iMac, the temperature has stayed consistently in the 55-65 degree range and the shut down has not occurred since.

Many thanks to those who offered advice

cheers
Stew
