Hi Michael,
I imagine that you did not de-authorise your old Mac that iTunes was
authorised on before bringing everything onto your new Mac.
You have to de-authorise the old machine before you can authorise the
new machine.
If your "work around" is working ok ... that's good.

Hi Ronni, I have indeed tried de-authorising butt de-authorisation
was unsuccessful on every attempt.
I have now solved the problem somewhat clumsily by accepting the
presence of the phantom account and seeking a password change for
it. Everything is now working perfectly.
Many thanks for advice

Hello Wendy & Michael,
Have you tried fully de-authorising the iTunes application and then
reauthorising it, so the program goes through a full cycle of
changing the authorisation
settings.
Then Quit iTunes and restart iTunes.
If you've hit the five-authorisation limit so that when you try to
get iTunes authorised you get the message that you've hit that
limit, log into your iTunes Store account.
You should see a button that will allow you to clear all your
authorisations.
You can then reauthorise those systems you are currently using.
Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The de-authorise
All button will not appear if you have fewer than 5 authorised
computers, or if you have used this option within the last 12 months.
If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact the
iTunes Store support via email.

Michael,
I know this won't help, but I have this exact same problem with
four iTunes songs, it goes round in circles asking for
reauthorisation etc etc. All other iTunes songs play with no
problems, it is just with these four.
A friend of mine had a similar problem a couple of years ago and
he contacted Apple and they were able to resolve the issue for
him. I am planning on doing that soon.

I have just restored (with Super Duper) to a new machine and am
encountering problems in iTunes authorisation. Many of my
playlists will function normally but for all iTunes purchased
music I get the message "This computer is not authorised to
play. (title of tune). To play this song you must authorise this
computer to play songs using the account "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".
This is not my account name. When I correct it to my actual
account ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) I get the message that the machine
is already authorised and upon attempting to play the tune I once
more get the initial message asking me to authorise in the name
of an account that does not exist. And so on...........
