Yeah, that sounds more realistic considering the real cost of the
iPhone not including subsidy. I wonder if these iPhones are grey-
market imports to avoid the 3-year AT&T exclusive on iPhones in the USA?

I cried for a little while but that's what u get right now.
So I don't think the deal that Ed is doing would put you in front?
Doesn't sound like it is a terribly good deal particularly if that
price doesn't include US sales tax (or delivery & insurance if
purchased online) on top.
Assuming USD$600 + 7-10% sales tax = ~ AUD$1,100
Even with the AUD$150 unlock fee, a 16GB iPhone 3G purchased outright
through Telstra here in Oz would only cost $847 + $150 = $997 AUD. If
you manage to get Telstra to waive the $150 unlock fee as per this guy http://www.itwire.com/content/view/19556/1168/
it's obviously even cheaper. It's also nice to stay legit. :-)

$600 USD is $929 AUD according to my currency converter. That means
its perhaps only a little cheaper than buying a 3G iphone outright
here in Perth. You can do this at Apple Resellers who will unlock
the phone if you don't want to go with Telstra.

That's great Edward but that works out to $1000 USD, is that a

I would be disappointed of course.
Would you suggest I still buy one?
Are people looking to buy US models in Aus?
Must check out 3 & where they're at re their application to
Apple.

Hi Ken,
I have to clear a couple of things up here...
The iPhone 3G has only been jailbroken, which means that if
you jailbreak
your iPhone you will have complete read/write access to the
file system. It
does not mean that it is unlocked for any carrier ie useable
on any carrier.
The iPhone 3G (current model) as of today can not be unlocked
via a
jailbreak.
The only way an iPhone 3G can be unlocked is via a carrier, ie
you call
Telstra and they will charge you AU$150 to unlock the phone
for use on other
carriers' networks. Or you purchase an iPhone in Hong Kong
(Italy too I
believe) where they can come unlocked. There is a caveat here
as some people
who have purchased the iPhone in HK unlocked, then updated the
firmware in
the UK have found their phones to be relocked... Though that's
another
story. Oh and supposedly there are some chop shops in Vietnam
that can take
apart your iPhone and unlock it, however I this may still be a
software
unlock - but again another story.
So what I'm saying is if you purchase an iPhone in the US, and
ignoring the
whole explanation that Mart gave which was v.good, you will
have a locked
iPhone that will essentially be an iPod Touch in Aus - as it
won't work with
Aus carriers unless AT&T unlock it and I think you will have
difficulty
getting them to do that. And Telstra/Optus won't unlock it as
it's not
theirs...
Sorry to pour cold water on this for you but it's not quite as
straight
forward as you might think. Up until this point I've had 4
(maybe 5, I've
lost count) iPhones two first gens that I unlocked and two 3Gs
one I Paid
Telstra to unlock. I've sold all of them except for my current
one which is
locked...
Good luck in your search the iPhone is definitely worth it,
Chris.

Hi Martin/Ken
Sorry, Yes, it was the 1st Generation 2G Iphone that I
bought in
the US, but I understand that software is now available to
hack the
3G now as well. I had to download LibertyX to sync with my
Macbook. I am running firmware 1.1.4 as I have not been
game to
update since it is running so flawlessly as is, but because
of this
I cannot download Apps from the Itunes store. This is no
biggy as
there are thousands of native Apps available and so far have
been
able to find the exact App or another one that does the same
thing. Otherwise I have had no problems with the Iphone.
So, Ken
you can either buy a 2G Iphone on US EBAY which what I did
or take
your chances with a new 3G, which is what I intend do on my
next
trip to the US.
Kind regards
Janis
