Hi Ronni
Hm the iphoto outlook is about as sunny as the weather in the hills
this morning. I have at least learned a few things...
I deleted the preference file which gave me a brand new library.
Imported some pics and watched a finder window while it did its stuff
- sure enough a folder called 2001 is created within Imports and all
the files go into it. But when it has finished, Imports folder
disappears and the images move to Data > 2009 > Roll 1 which is as it
should be. This is the bit my library has forgotten how to do.
Unfortunately when I pointed iphoto at the backup library it has the
same problem. I had imported these last few rolls without opening any
images and as the thumbnails were fine - at first - didn't know
anything was amiss until the thumbs subsequently vanished.
2 different cameras used so it's not the memory card
I have not been rummaging around in the library. I know that There be
Dragons...
So I suppose the question is - is there a painless way of dragging
the pictures in the old, corrupt library into the shiny new, working
one, bearing in mind the dangers of rummaging?
Your thoughts welcome
best

Hi Alastair,
Rebuilding the iPhoto Database didn't work. It's looking like the
library database, Library6.iPhoto could be corrupted, or a file is.
Have you tried deleting the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" file,or moving
it to your desktop ?
Quit iPhoto before you do, then locate it in Home > Library >
Preferences - com.apple.iPhoto.plist & drag it to your desktop or
trash (but don't empty the trash yet).
Then restart your computer
Then relaunch iPhoto
1. The backup iPhoto Library you say you have, was that working
correctly? You might have to revert back to this backup.
2. Is it only since you have tried to import these new rolls into
iPhoto that things have gone wrong?
3. Are you importing from the same camera?
4. You haven't touched anything in the iPhoto Library folder in
Finder have you?
I'm thinking you might have to go back to your iPhoto Library
backup, if it was working without any problems.
iPhoto 6 I remember was a flaky version of iPhoto, it has improved
with each version since.

Ronni

Hi again Ronni
Thanks for suggestion - but after another rebuild all is as before
except that I now have FOUR identical copies of my last roll, all
of which produce the file when clicked.
(pause)
I imported another, different roll, to see if the import system
was working now. It imported fine and all worked, but the files
were in a new subfolder of Imports.
Quit and relaunch - again asked to import unimported photos (I
said yes but then don't import duplicates) - the newest roll is
still there but no files linked to thumbs. Of the four identical
rolls, one is now blank, one is blank except for two thumbs (huh?)
and two are still complete, but no longer linked to anything.
Weirder and weirder
many thanks

When you rebuilt the iPhoto Library did you 'tick' "Recover
orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder".
In fact did you tick all 5 options?
Searching for the files by name within iPhoto won't find these
photos as they are disconnected photos.
IPhoto has lost the connection to them ... why ...we don't know yet.
Do you have a backup of your iPhoto Library?
If not I would do one before you do anymore messing around ;-)

Ronni

Have you checked your iPhoto Preferences > Advanced -
"Importing: Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to
library, and "Add ColorSync profile". Are they both ticked?

Thanks Ronni and sorry I forgot to mention that I tried a
rebuild - it spent an hour on the job but to no avail. As I
said, searching for the files by name brings up nothing so I
suspect they are gone.
None were greyscale
many thanks

Hi all
I'd really appreciate advice on this iphoto 6 problem - it's
a bit tricky to explain which is why I'm having no luck with
mr Google...
The last few rolls I imported have disappeared - ie, blank
thumbnails and the grey "!" when I try to open one.
Searching for them by file number (the thumbnails still have
their numbers) fails to find them anywhere.
Hello Alastair,
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between
the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option
(or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue
to rebuild.
If I import another roll from the camera it seems to go in
fine, but it hasn't been stored properly in the library,
just in the Imports folder (in a sub-folder called 2001). If
I quit iphoto and re-launch, it says there are photos in the
library that haven't been imported, would I like to import
them? If I say yes, it then asks what to do with all the
duplicates, as if they are in there already! If I say import
them again, I get a set of working thumbnails, but if I
click them I just get !s
(update - after further attempts I now have 2 identical sets
of thumbnails for my latest roll which DO launch the files
when clicked. But they are still in the 2001 imports folder)
any insights appreciated
Were any of the photos "Greyscale" images?
Try rebuilding the library first Alastair and see how you get
on.
Cheers,
Ronni
