Hi Sam,

Look closely at the screen, can you still see the icons in the background?
If you can and it seems extremely dark, then your problem is likely an LCD 
inverter board. 
This isn't a terribly expensive part but getting it replaced might not be cheap 
labor wise. 

An LCD inverter is what powers the backlight for the screen. 

I would suggest you backup everything you need on your computer  to an external 
Hard Drive, as the eMac could well be on its way out.
