Hello Jon

For question 2. Have you tried downloading the 10.5.8 Combo Update and 
installing that manually. You can download it from here 
<http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058comboupdate.html>.
 You can still do an archive and install to save your important settings etc. 
Just follow the prompts after running the disk image file.

Question 1. I should leave to someone with more experience, but have you 
considered reformatting the external drive after saving anything you want to 
keep, to another drive?
