As for misstatement, I don't think that is at all harsh. A quick search for 
some definitions turned up my intended meaning
   "misstate - state something incorrectly", or
   "misstatement: a statement that contains a mistake".

Also if you read my whole post, you will see that the tone was meant to be 
comic and provocative. I guess I should be careful to make my intended meaning 
more clear in email -- it's a lot easier to do in conversation.
