10.4 should install fine. 9.2.2 is in a completely different space, so no amount of messing with Mac OS X will affect it. You could even do a clean install of Mac OS X (without formatting the HD, of course!) without affecting 9.2.2. In any event, I strongly recommend choosing the option of "Clean Install with Archive" when upgrading to 10.4.
