Jewels, this is a long shot. During the drag/drop process into iTunes, is it possible your mouse is passing over a potential drop point (some other folder on the way to the intended folder) that is making OSX jam up. If you do the menu driven import method (Ronni suggested this below) that would at least eliminate that as a possible reason for the hang ups. I have this problem with Windows Explorer at my work and use other methods as a result (Import process or Copy/Paste).
