You could take the lazy option and get a template from somewhere to use,
and just customise it a bit? You could cheat even more and use
something like Joomla to run the site... there's plenty of templates for
it, and it'd take care of plenty of features :)
The forums work and I want to keep them with the same topics etc, but =20
ideally I want to theme them so that they merge seamlessly with the =20
res of the site but without using iframes.
I think phpBB can be customised quite a bit - you should be able to add
a custom header + footer to put it within your site design, and change
all the colours etc to match.
BTW make sure you keep phpBB bang up to date... it's a common attack
vector, there's been several vulnerabilities discovered in it over time.
