Hi all:
I'm having a major deployment problem and unfortunately I seem to be
lacking the experience to solve it. For some unknown reason, my server
(OSX 10.4) is all of the sudden launching "phantom" instances of my
apps. I'm seeing two different things:
1. In scenario one JavaMonitor seems to be reporting that the app is
trying to launch. However, the instance never actually launches and
nothing gets written to the log path that is setup for the instance.
2. In scenario two JavaMonitor seems to be reporting that the app is
trying to launch and the log file actually indicates that the instance
launched and is waiting for requests. By all appearances it is running
- except to JavaMonitor. It continues to report that the instance is
trying to launch and if I leave the monitor page and come back it
reports a death for the instance.
I have two apps I'm trying to deploy - one is an update and the other
is a new app. BOTH have exhibited the problem above. Reboots don't
seem to have helped but it did help when I used Server Admin to stop
and restart the WebObjects service. At that point I was able to launch
two instances of my updated app.
Now what is happening with my new app is what is described in scenario
two above. It seems that it is actually launching but JavaMonitor
never finds out. :-) It eventually reports a death. So, when I use
JavaMonitor to launch again I get an error that the port (2004) is
already in use - presumably by the phantom running instance. However,
I can't connect to the running instance, etc.
I haven't made any changes to the server and it has been happily
running the previously deployed app for some time. I have often
deployed updates without any problems. The biggest recent change is
that I'm now deploying from Eclipse instead of XCode. However, since I
did manage to get one of my apps running that doesn't appear to be
problem.
Has anyone seen this set of symptoms before and maybe has some advice
for how to proceed?
Tim
