The problem with that is, that in some countries invoice numbers are not allowed to have gaps.
As for Chuck's solution, also notice that it does not help you deal with the potential demand for edibility.
If this requirement stands, kick it. You would NEVER be happy again. These are generated numbers (for orders / invoices). As I said: in some countries it is illegal to change them once they are assigned.
