Let me start by saying that the efforts of all of the engineers working on OpenSolaris are to be applauded. It is truly a great OS well capable of taking over form Linux as the OS of choice for *nix developers.
That said, I am increasingly concerned that there is not enough consideration being given at the highest level within Sun to building a community around OpenSolaris. A case in point is the bookmarks toolbar in OpenSolaris 2008.05 . This contains many links to opensolaris.org, including an excellent "Live Bookmark" menu for Planet OpenSolaris. Unfortunately someone at Sun decided it would be a Good Idea (tm) to create a seperate site to promote the OpenSolaris distro - i.e. opensolaris.com . This has effectively split the emerging community around the distro between the 2 sites. I fail to see how this is in anyone's interests. The fragmentation continues with the fault that is preventing the Jive forums on opensolaris.org from picking up messages from the corresponding mailman mailing list. These two errors deomonstrate a lack of focus within Sun towards assisting the community, and are simply not good enough! Solaris has a hard enough time gaining mind-share from from other OSes without Sun shooting itself in the foot in this way. Please, please, please can we have some assurances that Sun takes community building as seriously as developing the Solaris product. These are amateur mistakes - please fix them! End of rant.
