It definitely isn't you. Oracle is a pain in the ass to install/manage. It's a resource hog, and wants lots of memory, lots of semaphores, etc., etc. And it isn't self-tuning. Sybase and its cousing MS SQL are definitely on a different plane when it comes to these things. Have you looked at PostgreSQL? It's very Oracle-like in its architecture, but is a snap to install/manage.
