Just a thought - as you say it has sat there for 5 years with never a 
screwdriver near it - have you tried something as simple as cleaning the 
usb connectors - plugs and sockets - with switch cleaner - or even using a 
different lead - in case there is any grime accumulation before resorting 
to the screwdriver.
