Follow-up Comment #2, bug #3508 (project wesnoth):
I've run some tests to see if this is still a problem. I find:
1) There is no perceptible delay in generation for even extremely large maps
on 2007 hardware, two Moore's Law cycles later.
2) Mountain density and size is adjustable with a slider.
3) Tundra is probably still too prevalent. Maybe the generator needs a
temperature slider.
