My apologies if this doesn't come out well, I had surgery earlier this week
and the days that I expected to be sitting back working on this with
nothing else to do turned out to be crappy, drug hazed days of nothing.

Several people have asked me about including the khalifate for this
release, something that I would very much like to do. I think it is a
shame they were removed before as they would be in much better shape by now
I expect. In the time since they were removed there were some changes,
some improvements - but the reality is that they have languished. People
have come forward from time to time to help but energy is low, and I
confess I have been very unmotivated to put time into polishing the
khalifate or recruiting others since they were removed from mainline.

I know that opinions will differ, but in my opinion the khalifate era is
ready to include in mainline. Is it as good as the default era? No. I
can't imagine that it will ever be as good as default until some time after
it has been mainlined and polished with the same love that other parts of
the game receive.

To the extent that there can ever be consensus about these things, there is
a loose consensus among the part of the multiplayer community that I talk
to that they are fun and it would be worth including them. They were
tested in a multiplayer tournament this summer by a segment of some of the
more active ladder players and there is a desire there to see more of them.

As I see it, the main reason against including the khalifate at this time
would be that they are not as polished as many other parts of the game. If
that is the reason, then I can't fight against it, I can just state my
opinion that if that is the criterion then we will never see another
faction added to mainline.

There are several advantages to adding them now that I see. First, this is
the kind of change that could get a chunk of the multiplayer community back
to playing on the development server, which would be great for the health
of bug testing and future releases. I don't think I'm alone in lamenting
that few regular users are testing the development branch on the
multiplayer server, leading to bugs going unnoticed until crunch time or
after a release.

Secondly, it is the quickest way to make up for lost time - these guys have
trickled along for many years. After they were added last time there was
quite a bit of good work that was done fixing and formatting - tweaks that
were not thought of until more eyes were looking at them and so on.

So what is needed?

1. unit descriptions updates - noy thinks this can be finished in the next
few days
2. files from umc-dev to be merged into trunk - I tried to do this last
time and created a number of problems. I will need help or someone who is
better at this sort of thing to just do it.
3. double checking of missing parts/glaring errors
4. post merge testing to be sure everything works.

Others? I don't know, I am fading fast and my mind is not very clear. I
expect to be able to put in a lot of time toward this next week, but #2 is
what needs to happen the soonest and it will be slow if I do it.

So that leaves me asking for help. If the khalifate are going to make it
in into mainline for this release then some delay will be needed, otherwise
we punt...and maybe it happens "down the road". Apologies if this is
rambling, I think I better just stop now.
